Payyanur
Kathakali Arangu, an organization formed by the Kathakali
lovers of Payyanur has completed six years successfully. The
monthly programs conducted by the Arangu are going to
celebrate its platinum jubilee by conducting their 75th
program.
The
Kathakali Arangu was formed in May 1999. So far 72 Major
Kathakali troupes performed at Payyanur through their monthly
programs. Payyanur was fortunate to witness the splendid
performances of Kalamandalam Gopi, Kottakkal Sivaraman,
Kalamandalam Ramankutty, Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair,
Mangombu Sivasankara Pillai, Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair, Oyur
Kochu Govinda Pillai, Kalamandalam Hyderali, Kalamandalam
Haridas, Sankaran Embranthiri etc. Apart from Kathakali, the
organization provided venue for great Masters of Koothu,
Koodiyattam and Classical Music to perform at Payyanur.
The
Kathakali Arangu doesn’t get any sort of financial support
from government but finds its funds only through the amount
raised from the membership subscription. Presently it has
about 350 members. Swami Krishnanada Bharathi, the chief
patron of the organization says that their prime motive is to
promote good Kathakali lovers at Payyanur. Though the
organization had a plan to start an institution for the
training of Kathakali, it was dropped due to financial
hurdles. Now the Arangu is engaged in an endeavor to publish a
souvenir which is expected to be a reference guide on
Kathakali. TP Bhaskara Poduval and TM Jayakrishnan are the
main organizers of the Payyanur Kathakali Arangu.
